How we treat a European wasp nest

Finding the entry point is the job. It takes patience and a bit of art: we track their flight lines until we find the exact crack they’re using. Some days they make it easy, hovering in and out of one spot; other days they’re agitated and scattered, and it takes longer. Then we suit up head to toe — European wasps deserve that respect — and dust the nest through the cavity with a machine that pushes insecticidal dust right through the void. It works like a domino effect: every wasp that passes through the dust carries it deeper into the colony, and once it reaches the queen, the nest stops reproducing. After the treatment: what to expect

• Do I need to block up the hole? We don’t push it. Getting wasps is bad luck, not a building fault, and blocking holes is maintenance work that rarely prevents the next nest.
• Do I need to remove the nest? No. A dead nest inside a wall does no harm — it dries out into something like papier-mâché. Cutting into the wall to remove it does more damage than leaving it.
