Pigeons colonising the solar panels, starlings in the eaves, droppings streaking the carport, something biting the kids at night after birds nested in the roof — bird problems come in more shapes than any other pest, and most of Melbourne’s operators only sell you one fix. We do the whole job: nest and droppings removal, clean-up and sanitising, mite treatment, and the proofing — spikes, mesh, netting and solar panel proofing — that stops it happening again. All of it humane, and all of it inside Victoria’s wildlife laws, which matter more with birds than any other pest we treat.
The gap under a rooftop solar array is warm, dry, sheltered and safe from predators — to a feral pigeon it’s a luxury cliff ledge, which is exactly what their instincts look for. One pair moves in during early spring; six to eight weeks later it’s a roosting group, and the cavity under your panels is packed with nesting material, feathers and droppings.
It costs you three ways: fouled panels generate noticeably less power, the droppings are corrosive — health authorities note they damage solar panels, air-conditioning units and roofing — and dry nesting debris packed against the panel wiring is a documented fire risk. The scratching over your bedroom at dawn is just the reminder.
Our fix is the full sequence, not a shortcut: remove the nests, clean and sanitise under the array, then fit heavy-duty mesh around the panel perimeter — clipped to the panel frames, no drilling into your panels or roof. The photos below are our own techs on Melbourne roofs: the before, the install, and the finished mesh.
Starlings, sparrows and Indian mynas squeeze through gaps you’d swear were too small — under eave corners, behind gutter lines, into roof voids. Because these are introduced species, their nests can legally be removed year-round in Victoria, and that’s only half our job: we also seal the entry point and sanitise the nesting spot, because an empty nest cavity left open is a vacancy sign for the next pair.
Here’s the one that catches families off guard: bird mites live in the nest while chicks are being raised — and when the young birds leave, the mites go looking for a new host. If the nest is in your roof void, that host can be you. Unexplained bites at night, a few weeks after you noticed birds in the roof, is the classic pattern. It’s why every nest removal we do can include a mite treatment — taking the nest without treating the mites is half a job.
Perch lines are the other half of bird control — the balcony rail, the carport beam, the shop signage, the warehouse rafters where droppings pile up on whatever’s below. Spikes, mesh and netting fitted to the actual perch and entry lines move the birds on permanently, and we handle the clean-up too: accumulated droppings are corrosive and shouldn’t be dry-swept, which is why the clean-up belongs with the professionals. For body corporates, property managers and commercial sites, we work in with your access requirements and provide the documentation your building needs.
Every native bird in Victoria is protected — and that includes some surprises. Seagulls nesting on a flat commercial roof: protected. Swallows under the veranda: protected. Ravens — the birds most people call crows: native, and protected. What we can always do for natives is exclusion — netting, mesh and proofing that keeps them off without harming them, no permit needed. What requires a permit is disturbing them or removing an active nest: that needs an Authority to Control Wildlife from the Conservation Regulator, which the property owner applies for and we then carry out as your nominated agent. We’ll tell you straight which side of that line your job sits on — and steer well clear of anyone who won’t.
| Introduced — not protected | Native — protected |
|---|---|
| Feral pigeon | Seagull (silver gull) |
| Common starling | Welcome swallow |
| House sparrow | Magpie & magpie-lark |
| Indian myna | Raven (“crow”) |
| Blackbird & spotted dove | Native doves, ibis, cockatoos |
| Nests removable year-round | Proofing fine — nest work needs a DEECA permit |
The proper sequence is: remove the nests, clean and sanitise under the array, then fit mesh around the panel perimeter so they can’t get back under. Meshing over the top of existing nests and mess — which is the cheap version — locks the smell, mites and fire-risk debris in place. Ask whoever quotes you which one they’re doing.
Our mesh clips to the panel frames — nothing is drilled or glued to the panels or your roof, which is exactly why clip-on mesh is the industry-standard method. If your installer’s warranty has specific conditions, check them before any work — that’s true of anything that touches your panels.
Depends entirely on the bird. Introduced species — feral pigeons, starlings, sparrows, mynas — yes, year-round. Native species — including seagulls, swallows and ravens — are protected, and removing an active nest needs an Authority to Control Wildlife. We identify the species first and tell you which rules apply.
Because scaring changes nothing about why they chose your roof — warmth, shelter, a safe ledge. Pigeons have strong site loyalty and will return to a good spot for years. The only permanent fix is making the spot physically unavailable: proofing the panels, ledges and entry points they’re using.
Quite possibly. When chicks leave a nest in a roof void, the bird mites that fed on them go searching for a new host, and they can end up in bedrooms. If bites started a few weeks after bird activity in the roof, that’s the classic pattern — nest removal plus a mite treatment fixes the source, not just the symptom.
