Scratching Noises in the Roof at Night — Rat, Mouse or Possum?

Quick answer: heavy thumping at dusk and dawn is usually a possum. Scurrying and gnawing after dark points to rats. Light, fast scratching that seems to travel along the ceiling is mice. And noise in the roof or gutters during the day is often birds. Here’s how our technicians tell them apart over the phone — and the story of why it matters which one you’ve got.

The clock does most of the diagnosing

When someone calls about roof noises, the first two questions we ask are: what time are you hearing it, and how long has it been going on? The answers do most of the work before anyone climbs a ladder.

Possums are creatures of habit — they leave their den around dusk and return near dawn, so possum noise comes in two heavy bursts a day, and it’s loud. A possum crossing your ceiling can sound like something was dropped upstairs. Rats and mice work the night shift in between: less weight, more movement. And if the sound is mainly in daylight hours, especially near the roof edges and gutters, think birds before anything else.

The sound and the weight

Beyond timing, the sound itself talks. Rats scurry with some weight behind it, and they gnaw — if you can hear something working away at timber in the small hours, that’s a rat keeping its teeth in check, and it’s also how wiring gets damaged. Mice are lighter and faster: a skittering that moves along the ceiling and stops dead when you thump the plaster. Possums don’t bother being subtle — thumps, drags and the occasional growl or hiss. Once you’ve heard a possum argue with itself in a roof, you don’t forget it.

The Reservoir job that proves why it matters

One of ours: a Reservoir home with scratching in the roof, and everything pointed to rats. But on a follow-up visit the noises had a second author — wedged between the top plate and a roof truss, our technician found a possum. The scratching had been two species all along.

That’s why species identification comes before treatment, every time. A possum is a protected species in Victoria — it can’t be trapped and relocated like a pest, and you should never put rat bait in a roof that might have a possum in it. The right sequence is: identify, then treat rats and mice one way, and handle a possum the legal, humane way — removal and sealing the entry point so the den stops being available.

What we actually do in your roof void

Two things get checked first. Droppings in the insulation — the size, shape and spread tell us the species and how busy the traffic is. And daylight — in a roof cavity that should be dark, any light leaking in marks an entry point, and finding the hole beats guessing every time.

Then treatment is about placement knowledge, not heroics. Rodents range widely and will find a properly positioned bait station — securely placed near the roof access is typically sufficient for a standard treatment, no need for anyone to crawl the length of your cavity disturbing insulation on the way. Everything goes in locked, tamper-resistant stations, positioned where kids and pets can’t reach. And our baiting approach is chosen so rodents feed and head back to their nesting area — usually outside or underground — rather than dying in your roof.

What you can do tonight

Before you call anyone: jot down when you hear the noise and what it sounds like — thump, scurry or scratch. Have a quick look under the kitchen sink and behind the pantry for droppings. And hold off on supermarket bait, especially if there’s any chance it’s a possum — the wrong treatment for the wrong species creates problems that are harder to fix than the original noise. Then call our rat and mouse team on (03) 9436 0883 — phones are answered 7am to 9pm, seven days, and with your notes we’ll usually know what you’ve got before we arrive.

If the scratching has stopped — and a smell has started

That combination usually means something has died in the cavity. A mouse can smell for a week or two, a rat for up to a month, and a possum for longer. Don’t wait it out — our dead animal removal service finds it, removes it, and deals with the smell properly.
